Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit. She tries to convince everyone she's fine--despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she's crazy. Other reviewers may not be fully informed on this book November 29, 2009 Stephanie Mooney (River Rouge, Mi United States) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I see a lot of complaints in other reviews that could be cleared up if they knew a bit more about this series. This is not a portion of a book, nor is it missing information. This book is a prequel. It is meant to be read after "My Soul to Take". It merely provides a little of the backstory that is alluded to in Book 1 of the story. Once you know what you're dealing with, I think it makes a lot more sense. I really enjoyed "My Soul to Take", and likewise enjoyed this as well.
amazingly surprising August 3, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Without giving the content of the story away, I was caught by the end of the last chapters trying to discover... what was really happening with the main character. I felt connected in trying to see if she was really crazy. I was drawn in, because she was asking the same questions I would have asked. I don't know, somehow I found myself in the hospital... with her.
There are a number of things I consider for me at least to consider anything good movie or book wise. One is what I found in this story. Days later that I found my self remembering and thinking about this story. So much that I was going back to re read the thing I like things to haunt me stay with me if you will Intriguing.
Great teaser - looking forward to reading more of this author February 3, 2010 A. Bishop (Harrisburg, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am an adult, who downloaded this because it was free. $0.00 plays havoc with my 1-click trigger finger, what can I say?
First off, it's free. You aren't getting taken across here - it's free. I have no idea why some people are getting upset because it is a prequel, not a full book. It's essentially a novella, giving you a taste of the upcoming stories.
Here's what's great about it: she could have taken up time in the story, pulling you away from the action, to write this background. Instead, she offers you the background of the story in a separate format so you can decide if 1. you like the writer's style and 2. you like the story set up. What a grand idea. If only Stephanie Meyer had thought of that. Alas, I digress.
Rachel Vincent is a good writer - not fantastic, but solid, and she captures the nuances of young relationships (I'm speaking to her other books now, that I've started reading BECAUSE of this sneak peek). Her female lead in this story is well-defined, and her ability to create an emotional reaction in her reader, and to draw them into the mystery of the story, is excellent. I *wish* this wasn't published by a Harlequin publisher, as that colors my view of the story, but putting that aside, it's a fun read.
If you continue in the series, you'll find she's an author who FINALLY gave up on vampires and created her own fun, paranormal bent, and it's a great ride through that world.
This is definitely a YA book, but any adult who enjoys paranormal and a bit of romance will get a kick out of it. Enjoy!

The first great thing about this little book was that I got it for free from eharlequin (you can too), or amazon if you go the kindle route. Who doesn't love free books? The next awesome thing about this shorty is that it grips you, from page one, you are stuck like glue to the story. Rachel Vincent writes amazingly, there is no denying the talent she has for stringing words and phrases together to draw in a reader. This story moved quick, drew the characters flawlessly, and sets up the 'Soul Screamers' series with unfailing perfection.
